Romania. Avalanche kidnapped a group of Polish tourists. One is dead

A snow avalanche took three Polish tourists in the mountains of northern Romania. One person died, two managed to get out from under large amounts of snow on their own, according to local media on Friday, citing mountain rescuers.

According to Romanian media, after 2 p.m. on Thursday, mountain rescuers received a report of an avalanche in the Rodna Mountains in the Marmorasz district in the northern part of the country. An avalanche kidnapped a group of three Polish tourists on snowmobiles. The incident took place in the Prislop Pass area.

Two people got out of the avalanche on their own and called the emergency number for help. The place where the tragic event took place was located by the first rescuers within 40 minutes. Another rescue team then rushed to the spot. The whole action, taking place in hard-to-reach terrain, lasted three and a half hours, described the local portal emaramures.ro.

One tourist died

Dan Benga, head of the regional mountain rescue unit, said one person had died.

– Two tourists are alive. They got out on their own, their condition is good – he said in an interview with Digi24.

The avalanche risk in the area where the avalanche came down was on Thursday at the third level of avalanche danger on a five-point ascending scale.
