Violent storms and high waves hit northwestern Spain over the weekend. On Sunday, the entire coastline of Galicia was under an orange weather alert, and difficult conditions also prevailed along the northern coast of the Iberian Peninsula. The downpours also caused a lot of damage in neighboring Portugal.

On Saturday and Sunday, the north-western part of the Iberian Peninsula was affected by humid air masses, which brought violent storms, heavy rain and high waves. It was dangerous in many regions of Spain and Portugal.

Wind up to 145 kilometers per hour

As described by local media, Saturday was a day of weather alerts in Galicia, an autonomous region of Spain. In the north, near the city of Viveiro, a maximum wind speed of 145.3 kilometers per hour was recorded in the morning. Sea conditions remained difficult on Sunday as well. In the coastal zone, a warning for waves reaching up to 7 meters was in effect throughout the day. According to the meteorological agency MeteoGalicia, the alert will also remain in effect on Monday.

The strong wind took its toll not only on the inhabitants of Galicia. It was also windy in Asturias – on Sunday, high waves crashed against the coast of Gijón, the largest city in the region.

Subway flooded, roads damaged

On Saturday, heavy rains hit the northern regions of Portugal. In Porto, the historic center of the city was flooded, including one of the main metro stations Sao Bento. One of the cobbled streets has partially collapsed. The torrents of water flowing down the streets were so rushing that they carried away chairs, tables and flower beds, and even one passer-by, who, however, was unharmed.
