The car drove into the harbor basin. A 40-year-old man is dead

According to the Maritime Search and Rescue Service, a car drove into the port basin in Gdynia near Kosciuszko Square. Dar Młodzieży is moored nearby.

According to PAP, the press officer of the Municipal Headquarters of the State Fire Service in Gdynia, Capt. Paweł Przybyłowicz, the report about the incident that took place at the height of Dar Młodzieży was received at approx. 10. “It showed that a passenger car with one person inside fell into the water for unknown reasons” – he pointed out and added that the body of the 40-year-old driver was pulled out of the water.

“An investigation team and a forensic technician went to the site. The policemen work under the supervision of the prosecutor. We are establishing the circumstances of the incident” – said the press officer of the Municipal Police Commander in Gdynia, subcommander. Jolanta Grunet.

The director of the Maritime Search and Rescue Service, Sebastian Kluska, previously announced on social media that people were trapped inside. The R-3 unit from the Sztorm ship took part in the rescue operation.

Our reporter talked to Joanna from Włocławek, a witness of the event. – We were sitting in the car, drinking coffee – says the woman. As he says, the car “drew slowly to the parking lot”. The driver stopped the vehicle and then just drove away. With impetus, without stopping, without reacting, he started towards the water. It’s hard to say what it looked like. I felt helpless,” says Joanna.

As reported by Adam Krajewski, TVN24 Gdańsk reporter, the action is currently focused on pulling the car out of the water. – The place where the car is has been marked with a special buoy so that all units that move around these port basins, but also the services, know where it is – explains the journalist.

The car lies at a depth of about 5 meters. They will be extracted from the water by a specialist crane, which is expected to arrive today.

The services are investigating the causes of the incident.
