The Polish ambassador in Budapest, Sebastian Kęciek, wrote a letter to the chief of staff of the Hungarian army, General Gabor Borondi, who called the German aggression against Poland in 1939 a “local war”, which would not have turned into World War II if peace talks had taken place early enough. He assessed that these words are “an unacceptable distortion of history and should not come out of anyone’s mouth.”

The words of the military were spoken on Tuesday in one of the programs of Hungarian television.

Ambassador Sebastian Kęciek writes at the beginning of the letter that he read this statement “with great surprise”.

“These words, which can be interpreted as an accusation of my country for escalating and complicity in causing a global conflict, are an unacceptable distortion of history for us and should not come from anyone’s mouth, in particular from the mouth of a representative of a country that is our close ally,” wrote Kęciek .

“The outbreak of World War II was not caused by the lack of peace talks with the aggressor, but by the policy of appeasement and yielding to the subsequent demands of the Third Reich,” the Polish diplomat said in the letter.

Europe should “stand in solidarity on the right side of history”

The Ambassador reminded that as a result of the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact, Hitler’s Germany and Stalinist Russia divided Polish territory and six million Polish citizens lost their lives as a result of the war.

“Today, in the face of Russia’s full-scale, unprovoked and illegal aggression against Ukraine Europe should learn from the Second World War and stand in solidarity on the right side of history, on the side of the victim, not the aggressor. Only in this way can we bring about lasting peace in Europe. History should not be used to undermine our unity.

President at the end of April Hungarian Katalin Novak, at the request of Defense Minister Kristof Szalay-Bobrovniczky, dismissed General Romulus Ruszin-Szendi from the post of commander of the Hungarian Armed Forces. General Gabor Borondi was appointed in his place.
