The Role of Parents in a Child’s Life

You cannot overestimate the importance of parental presence in a child’s life. From the moment a baby is born, they need a caregiver who will respond to their social, emotional and physical needs. If these needs are satisfied, a child becomes securely attached to their parents, which builds a strong foundation that will support them through every stage of their development.

The attachment paradox describes how a child can’t develop their independence unless their mother (or primary caregiver) is close by. Only when they feel secure in the presence of this special person, can they begin to explore the world and establish their independence.

The Need for Nurturing care

The WHO published guidance under the title “Nurturing Care for Early Childhood Development”, on the importance of parental involvement in a child’s life, where they describe how strong relationships with a nurturing parent are beneficial to children’s brain growth.

According to this document, interactions between parents and their children when they are very small and cannot speak yet are important for kids’ healthy development. Parents can help their children understand themselves and the world by being present and attentive to their needs from very young age to adulthood.

Giving Space

A lot has been said about the importance of parental presence and proximity to their children. As it turns out, space is also essential for healthy development.

The Montessori system of education requires parents and teachers to respect a child’s ability to choose and engage in activities that are beneficial to them, and not to interrupt their explorations. This approach puts trust and independence in children’s hands and expects the caregiver to allow them to make their own decisions in a safe environment.

Academic and Social and Development

Research has shown that children whose parents are involved in their education and home life from an early age can achieve better academic results and are less likely to exhibit problematic behaviors. What is more, the presence of supportive parents improves their social skills.

Setting Boundaries

Parents and caregivers need to set clear boundaries for their child. They should be able to tell them what is acceptable and what is unacceptable. Nevertheless, within these boundaries children should be allowed to make their own decisions, explore their potential, communicate with others, and find their own identity

Mindful Activities

You can help your children model healthy behaviors by practicing regular mindful activities, for example yoga, crafts or drawing. They are great for both relaxation and self- expression and can be used by children throughout their lives. The best way for your little ones to get engaged in mindful activities is to see you doing them.

In summary, to ensure emotional security, it is important that parents are present. It is equally important to give your children the physical, social and emotional space to make their own decisions, feel their emotions, and practice taking action.  Find more information about child development on the blog for teachers and parents at https://www.kidsacademy.mobi/.
