Tornadoes swept through the US states of Nebraska and Iowa on Friday. Many houses were damaged and there were reports of minor injuries. The disaster also caused power outages. Alarm sirens warned of the threat.

In Nebraska, hundreds of homes were damaged and nearly 10,000 were without power. There are no fatalities, but many people are slightly injured. Police said the damaged homes were mostly in the Elkhorn area, where rescuers went door to door to help people trapped under the rubble.

Two Elkhorn residents, Pat and Kim Woods, took shelter as the tornado was about 200 yards away. – We heard him coming. When we came back, our fence was gone, we looked northwest and the whole area was gone,” Pat reported. “The whole area north of us is (now) pretty flat,” Woods added.

There were no reports of fatalities, but local police Chief Todd Schmaderer said many people suffered minor injuries. The warnings sent to residents “saved the lives” of many people, he noted.

Steve McCoy, an airport official in nearby Omaha, said passengers were sent to shelters. The terminal was not damaged, but other airport buildings “are permanently damaged,” he added. After the tornado, the airport was reopened and flights were delayed.

The tornado crossed the Missouri River into neighboring Iowa, where reports of damage also came in. About 120 homes and businesses were damaged in Pottawattamie County, CNN reported.

The video below, captured by one of the witnesses of the phenomenon – Justin Williamson, shows a huge, dark vortex approaching the parking lot at the Gateway Mall. Emergency sirens sounded in the city.

The US National Weather Service (NWS) issued tornado warnings on Friday. Reports show that as of 9:30 p.m. Friday, there were 80 reports of tornadoes in five states, many of them confirmed.
