A passenger on a cruise ship has died after falling off a balcony shortly after leaving the port and hitting another passenger. Despite immediate medical attention, her life could not be saved, Virgin Voyages said.

The incident happened around 9:35 p.m. on April 2, shortly after Virgin Voyages’ Valiant Lady cruise ship set sail from Miami, Florida, to Roatan, Florida. Honduras The Independent reported two days later. After the tragedy on board, the ship returned to port, then resumed its voyage with a slightly different itinerary: it is to dock at a Mexico Cozumel Island and then sail to Bimini Island in the Bahamas.

Virgin Voyages said in a statement quoted by the media that “the passenger fell from her balcony to the lower deck and, despite immediate medical attention, died”, adding condolences to the deceased’s relatives. As she fell, the woman allegedly hit another passenger, who “was not seriously injured,” CBS News reported, citing a spokesman for the shipowner.

Cruise ship accidents

As noted by the popular travel portal The Points Guy, similar incidents on ships are rare: on average, they fall victim to 1-2 people per 2.5 million ships traveling at the same time. Balconies and open decks on cruise ships have railings, “usually at chest height for the average person.” “They are placed deliberately to ensure the safety of passengers,” the portal noted, pointing to the Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) accident report. It shows that in the years 2009-2019 there were 212 events on cruise ships, as a result of which passengers ended up overboard.
