It is a compound obtained at the end of World War I in the USA, used as an irritating combat poison of the lacrimator type, i.e. intended to pollute the air.

In accordance with the Geneva Protocol of 1925 the use of chloroacetophenone is prohibited, under the prohibition of the use of asphyxiating, poisonous or other war gases and bacteriological methods of warfare. Moreover, its use in combat conditions was prohibited by the resolution of 1696 of the United Nations General Assembly A/RES/2603 “The question of chemical and bacteriological (biological) weapons”.

“In total, the Armed Forces of Ukraine in the period from February 2023 to March 2024 recorded 1,412 cases of use of ammunition containing dangerous chemicals by the Russian Federation” – indicated the staff.

The Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine emphasizes that Russia's action is a violation “Convention Prohibiting the Development, Production, Stockpiling and Use of Chemical Weapons”, as well as the laws and customs of warfare. “Such actions of the Russian Federation are becoming systemic and the tendency to use them is only growing” – noted.
