Zakia Wardak, the Afghan consul general in India, resigned. She was the only woman in the Afghan diplomatic service. There were reports in the media that she was detained at the airport with 25 one-kilogram bars of gold brought from Dubai.
As reported by Indian media, Wardak was not arrested because she is entitled to diplomatic immunity.
Wardak announced her resignation in a post on the X platform. However, she did not mention the allegations regarding her. However, she stated that she had faced “numerous personal attacks and defamation, not only against me, but also against my immediate family and distant relatives.”
The Afghan Ministry of Foreign Affairs did not comment on either the media reports about Dubai gold or the diplomat's resignation. Wardak was appointed consul general of Afghanistan in Mumbai before the Taliban took power in Kabul in 2021.
