A search operation is underway for people who tried to cross the swollen Kwa Muswii River in southern Kenya in a truck. So far, 11 people have been found alive and seven dead.

A tragic accident occurred in Kavuthu village in Makueni County on Friday. One of the trucks, filled a large group of people tried to cross the swollen Kwa Muswii River. The vehicle was swept away by the fast current and overturned along with the passengers.

So far, 11 people have been rescued alive. Seven bodies were found. The search operation continues.

– There were two trucks, I was in the one that was ahead. Our truck passed without any problems, and when we reached the other side of the river, we heard screaming from the other side. I ran to see what happened. Then I realized that the truck behind us had sunk into the river and the people in it had been carried away, said James Mutuku, an eyewitness to the incident. – I realized that my cousin was among those who were underwater. Passers-by said they saw him trying to get out, he described on Saturday.

More rains forecast

Kenya has been struggling with the effects of heavy rains since March. According to the Kenya Red Cross Society, heavy rains across the country have displaced more than 11,000 people. According to the organization, at least 45 people have already died in Kenya over the past month. However, information provided by government services indicates that up to 70 people died due to the violent weather.

The Kenya Meteorological Department has warned that more heavy rains are expected in the coming week and has issued flood alerts.
