Angela Nikolau and Ivan Beerkus are a Russian couple who have an unusual hobby – they travel around the world and climb tall buildings or structures, and publish photos and recordings of their risky climbs on Instagram. They have already amassed a large group of fans. Beerkus has over 240,000 followers, Nikolau watches as many as 715,000. users.

On Thursday, December 29, the couple’s profiles appeared photos and recordings allegedly taken on top of the still unfinished Merdeka 118 skyscraper in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. “The peak of Merdeka 118 (679 m). This is the second tallest building in the world! I can’t describe my emotions. The most beautiful building I’ve ever been on,” Beerkus captioned one of the videos.

“I guess you want to know how I managed to get to the second tallest building in the world, but I’ll tell you the details later” – such a description of the recording from the top of the skyscraper being built in the center of Kuala Lumpur, Nikolau posted.

Malaysian police said an investigation had been launched into the matter. The authenticity of the photos and recordings posted by the Russians on the Internet is being investigated. If Nikolau and Beerkus actually climbed to the top of the Merdeka 118 skyscraper, they trespassed on private property, thus breaking the law.

Representatives of PNB, a real estate development company that is building the skyscraper, told officers that the construction site is secured by security guards, so it would be difficult to climb onto it and climb to the top of the building.

Merdeka 118 will be the second – after Burji Khalifa in Dubai – tallest skyscraper in the world. Its construction began more than eight years ago and is to be completed this year. The building is to be 678.9 meters high and has 118 floors.

The Malaysian daily New Straits Times writes that the recent Instagram activity of the Russians indicates that they have already left Malaysia. On New Year’s Eve, Nikolau posted a photo on her profile in which she poses against the background of fireworks on a building that journalists found to be located in a neighboring Thailand.
