The announcement about the quake was reported by Reuters, citing the Geological Survey United States. Lebanon is located 70 kilometers as the crow flies from Manhattan, New York.
The Mediterranean European Seismological Center indicated that the quake had magnitude 5.5 and its epicenter was at a depth of 10 kilometers. It was felt in New Jersey and New York.
No damage or injuries have been reported so far.
New York. Earthquake and appeal to residents
The quake occurred after 4 p.m. Polish time. Posts from concerned Internet users and celebrities appeared online. “I just had an earthquake. Did you feel it?” – we read in one of the entries. In turn, Reuters quotes a resident of the Bronx, New York. She described the earthquake as “violent rumbling that lasted 30 seconds.”
“Aftershocks may occur in the coming hours and days. Unless necessary, stay away from damaged areas for your safety. Be careful and follow information from national authorities” – appealed the European Mediterranean Seismological Center.
The last time an earthquake of a similar magnitude (5.2) occurred in this region was 140 years ago, in 1884.
