Oscars 2023. Who will win and who should. Typing

Must read

This year’s Oscars were dominated by one title. It is “Everything everywhere at once”, which received as many as 11 nominations for gold statuettes. The industry guilds’ pre-Oscar awards show that, in fact, 9 nominations for “Inisherin’s Ghosts” and “Same in the West” will not change much, because the picture of Dan Kwan and Daniel Scheinert does not give competitors a chance.

A few hours before the jubilee Oscar gala, a miracle would have to happen for the image of the duo Dan Kwan – Daniel Scheinert, called “Daniels”, not only to win the most important statuettes, but also several in technical categories. The Oscars gala has not had such a strong favorite for many years.

“Everything, everywhere at once”, a crazy science-fiction comedy – although American, cast mainly by Asian actors – conquered USA and according to the forecasts of both industry media critics and bookmakers, apart from (some) acting categories, it does not give much chance to other titles.

As every year, we have prepared a list of the most important competition categories, which, apart from the most likely winners of this year’s gala, included titles and creators who, in our opinion, actually deserved the statuettes. In the category that interests us the most – International Film – we give up trying to be objective and look with our hearts – Jerzy Skolimowski’s wonderful “IO” is the only film we can support.

Will the Daniels movie repeat the success of “Titanic”?

If there is no scandal like last year’s “slaying” (I’m talking, of course, about Will Smith, who slapped the host of the gala, Chris Rock), or no embarrassing slip-up (like in 2016, the wrong envelopes and the award of “La La Land” instead of “Moonlight” “), jubilee – 95th – Oscar gala, promises to be quite predictable.

The historical record “Everything, everywhere, at once” will not be broken, because even if it won Oscars in all categories in which it was nominated, 11 statuettes have already been nominated in 14 of James Cameron’s “Titanic” from 1997. He can at most repeat it, although that’s also unlikely.

Will Cate Blanchett win her third Oscar for her role as Lydia Tar?UIP

Blanchett or Yeoh? Butler or Fraser?

The most interesting are the acting categories, which always evoke great emotions. There is no doubt that in the two most important roles – female and male roles – in both cases there are two candidates who left the rest of the rivals behind.

And so Michelle Yeoh, nominated for her role in “Everything, everywhere, at once” competes with Cate Blanchett, and at the finish of the race overtakes her. In large part, this is due to the fact that the Academy feels a bit “obliged” to finally award an Asian actress, which many experts emphasize in their typings.

The situation is similar in the Best Male Role category. Here, Brendan Fraser, returning to the cinema with the role of his life in Aronofsky’s “The Whale”, fights with the young Austin Butler, who brilliantly plays Elvis Presley in Baz Luhrmann’s musical film. The rest of the candidates differ from them so much that it is in vain to look for them in bookmakers.

It’s a bit sad because both Colin Farrell and Billy Nighy and Paul Mescal have created really outstanding creations. Such great male roles and such an even level among the nominees have not been in this category for years. But there can only be one winner.

So we start the countdown. In a few hours everything will be clear.
