Storm Nelson is passing over Spain, bringing with it strong winds and high waves. According to local media, at least four people died on Thursday after being swept away by rough sea waves. The dangerous weather will last at least until Easter.
Difficult weather conditions have been affecting the inhabitants of the Iberian Peninsula since the beginning of the week and everything indicates that they will not improve anytime soon. Storm Nelson has been passing over the Iberian Peninsula since Thursday. The storm brought heavy rainfall and strong gusts of wind, as well as high waves in the coastal zone.
According to the national meteorological agency AEMET, on Friday the element threatened residents of the central and eastern parts of the country, and it will remain dangerous locally at least until Sunday.
Deadly dangerous sea
According to the daily “El Pais”, there were three fatal accidents related to the storm on Thursday. Two people died in Asturias in the north of the country – in the town of San Esteban de Pravia, a British citizen who was watching the rough waves fell into the sea. Just a few minutes later, in the neighboring commune of Cudillero, the waves grabbed a woman and threw her against the rocks. Although paramedics rushed to help, they could not save her.
Two people died near El Miracle beach in Tarragona, Catalonia. A teenager staying there with a group of friends fell into the water and was carried away by strong waves. An adult man rushed to help him and was also pulled into the sea. Several rescue teams, including a sea rescue helicopter, took part in the rescue operation, but despite the immediate help provided, both people died.
