A photo of a father holding his dead daughter’s hand in Kahramanmaras province is a symbol of the tragedy caused by the earthquake and highlights human despair, The Guardian wrote on Tuesday.
In the photograph, a man is huddled holding the hand of his 15-year-old daughter, lying on a bed among broken concrete slabs, against a backdrop of rubble that was probably their home.
The photo was released as the earthquake death toll in Syria and Turkey exceeded 5,000 – wrote “The Guardian”.
Videos and photos from the two earthquakes that hit the south Turkey and northern Syria, show rescuers digging with their hands, blocks of flats that collapsed like a house of cards in seconds, and a ruined castle that stood for nearly two millennia, the paper describes.
The epicenter of the first earthquake was the Pazarcik district in Kahramanmaras province in southeastern Turkey. The first 7.8-magnitude quake was followed a few hours later by a second 7.7-magnitude quake.
Elsewhere in Kahramanmaras province, rescuers pulled two children alive from the rubble. One was on the snowy ground. Rescuers had to silence onlookers to hear the voices of those buried under the rubble.
