The news of the American's death was announced by former advisor to the head of the Ukrainian Ministry of Internal Affairs, Anton Herashchenko. He said that on April 8, a man was arrested in Donetsk.
Russell Bentley, still in the USA, was convicted of drug smuggling and spent five years in prison. In 2014 he decided to come to Ukraine and engage in combat in the east of the country.
Bentley did not hide his pro-Russian sympathies. He wanted to “liberate Donbas” with a gun in his hand. Under the fighting name “Texas”, he fought on the side of the Kremlin against Ukrainian forces.

The wife of an American fighter provided information about the brutal detention. “My husband was detained and still is illegally detained by the military – tankers from the 5th Brigade,” she said, quoted by Herashchenko.
According to unofficial information, Russell Bentley became a victim of drunk Russian soldiers. Cibecause of his American accent, they mistook him for a cooperating spy z NATO and they gave him the ultimate punishment.
