Officers of the Mazovian National Revenue Administration found the equivalent of nearly EUR 150,000 in travel luggage. Travelers tried to bring in cash without reporting it.
Officers of the Customs and Tax Service checked travelers at Chopin Airport who came from non-EU countries and chose to go through the “green line – nothing to report” corridor. “Two travelers had significant amounts of money in different currencies in their luggage. Among them were Georgian lari, hryvnias, Russian rubles and US dollars,” the KAS press release reported.
They did not submit a foreign exchange declaration
As it was added, “travellers did not declare money when crossing the EU border, although they were obliged to do so.” In their luggage, the officers found a total of 149,088 euros. Travelers explained that the money came from the sale of agricultural land and a harvester. They were going to buy dollars with them.
The services remind that every person who transports at least EUR 10,000 (as well as the equivalent of this amount in other currencies), entering or leaving the EU, must report these funds in writing to the Customs and Tax Service officers. Submitting a foreign exchange declaration does not involve any fees, but the lack of it or providing false data in the declaration may result in penal fiscal proceedings.
“Among the service dogs of the Masovian chamber, we have three dogs trained to detect currencies. Adso, Boczek and Codi support the Customs and Tax Service officers in preventing illegal import and export of foreign currency. They are dual dogs. They sniff out not only currency, but also tobacco products – Adso and Codi and Bacon narcotics” – KAS mentioned.
