They were supposed to come into force 10 years ago, to this day they are only on paper. Probationary period regulations for new drivers still do not apply. Journalists are asking about the reasons for this state of affairs after the tragedies that have recently happened on the roads and which were caused by drivers with short experience. Material of the magazine “Polska i Świat”.

He had had a driving license for several weeks, he was speeding through the streets of Lublin. The camera of the person in the car recorded what the driver said just before the accident. – If you die on the day before Epiphany – said the young man.

A moment later, his car broke through the barriers, crashing into a lamppost and a catenary pole. The 18-year-old driver and passengers: a 17-year-old and a 16-year-old were killed. Only a 16-year-old survived.

– One person was taken to the hospital, we know at the moment, he is in a serious condition – informs the spokeswoman of the District Prosecutor’s Office in Lublin, Agnieszka Kępka.

Postpone introduction of probationary period provisions

– There should be changes, that’s for sure. Anyway, we can see what has been happening since the beginning of the year: drastic accidents, young people are dying – says driving instructor Piotr Rucki.

There has been talk of changing the regulations for young drivers for several years. – A few days ago it was 10 years when the provisions on the probationary period were to come into force. Unfortunately, over the last 10 years, they have been postponed for the next few years – points out Rafał Grodzki from the Provincial Road Traffic Center in Warsaw.

These include a green leaf behind the window, an order to drive at a lower maximum speed, higher penalties for two years for breaking the rules and additional training several months after receiving a driving license.

An hour of driving on a special track may not be training, but an important lesson. – It’s a matter of making them believe that this is not a computer game, here we don’t have nine lives, but only one – points out Piotr Rucki.

Young drivers are the most likely to cause accidents

Journalists asked the Ministry of Infrastructure and the Prime Minister’s Office why the ready regulations were stuck for 10 years, but they did not receive an answer. – The problem is that the Central Register of Vehicles and Drivers is not fully operational, especially the register of drivers – believes Rafał Grodzki.

Every year, 200,000 new driving licenses are issued in our country. Some young drivers with experience quickly gain confidence behind the wheel and start driving too fast and dangerously. Young drivers are the most likely to cause accidents.

Instructors and examiners are looking forward to tightening up the new regulations for young drivers. However, it is difficult to talk about new ones when they have been ready for several years.
