“For fear of air attacks Ukrainy Russian Il-76 military transport planes, previously stationed in Pskov at the border with Estoniahave been moved o approx. 2,700 km to the eastto the Khanty-Mansiysk Autonomous Okrug in Siberia” – reported the daily “Louna-Eesti Postimees” on Thursday.
Iły-76 stationed in Pskov became the Ukrainian target drone attack on August 29 last year, which destroyed four and several other machines were damaged.
Russia. Transfer of equipment and troops to Siberia
The Estonian daily referred to the Telegram channel of the city of Nizhnevartovsk in the Khanty-Mansiysk Autonomous Okrug, whose the authorities announced the transfer of military equipment and personnel from Pskov.
“Representatives of the Ministry of Defense Russia and the local governor discussed details of the transfer of aircraft and personnel air force, including the living conditions of military families in the new location,” it was reported.
Preliminary information shows that approximately 10 Iłów-76 will remain permanently transferred from Pskov to Nizhnevartovsk. The possibility of equipping the local airport with air defense systems was also discussed. Total number of soldiers and their families transferred will probably amount to approximately 1,500 people.
Russia. Ilyushin Il-76 aircraft moved to a new location
The planes that Russia decided to transport to a new location are four-engine Soviet jet transport aircraft, designed by the design office of Ilyushin. The prototype first flew in 1971, and serial production began in 1974 at the TAPO plant located in in Tashkent, Uzbekistan.
The Soviet Union used these planes transported 786,200 soldiers to Afghanistan and 315,800 tons of cargo. Since these planes are designed for high flights, it is very difficult to shoot them down during flights. This is why in Afghanistan partisans attacked them during take-off or landing. The durable airframes, however, were almost indestructible and even they continued to function properly after the attacks.
