Tauron Wytwarzanie informed that the reason for shutting down the unit with a capacity of 910 megawatts (MW) at the Jaworzno Power Plant is a failure of the milling system. The company assured that work is underway to restart the unit as soon as possible.

Tauron Wytwarzanie’s spokesperson, Patrycja Hamera, informed the Polish Press Agency that “the reason for the temporary shutdown of the block is an emergency fall of one of the mills, which consequently caused the shutdown of the block”. – We are working to launch the unit as soon as possible. The block will be synchronized with the national power grid again tomorrow at the latest, Hamera assured.

The failure at the Jaworzno Power Plant happened on Tuesday. A representative of a company belonging to Tauron Polska Energia added that the identified defects in the unit concern, among others, “just the mill system for which Rafako is responsible.” Onet was the first to inform about the shutdown of the unit in Jaworzno.

Mediation between Tauron and Rafako

January 11. Tauron Wytwarzanie called on Rafako to pay over PLN 1.3 billion as contractual penalties and compensation for faults and defects in the unit. In response, Rafako announced that it would file for bankruptcy, and then filed claims with Tauron for a total amount of approximately PLN 1.4 billion.

Both companies consider the other party’s claims unfounded.

On Tuesday morning, another round of mediation between Tauron and Rafako began at the General Prosecutor’s Office.

Another failure

The 910 MW unit was commissioned with a delay in November 2020. Its construction cost over PLN 6 billion. In June 2021, the unit was shut down due to defects repaired since then by contractors from the Rafako – Mostostal Warszawa consortium.

The unit was launched again – also with a delay compared to the original plans – at the end of April 2022. After that, the block was temporarily turned off twice more.

According to Rafako, the reason for the failure was the inadequate quality of coal supplied by Tauron. According to Tauron, the reasons are numerous defects and faults of the block.
