Russian leader Vladimir Putin probably he did not give a direct order murder of opposition leader Alexei Navalny – the Wall Street Journal reported on Saturday.

“WSJ” referred to people familiar with the matter and reported that several American agencies – including Central Intelligence Agency, Office of the Director of National Intelligence, and an intelligence unit of the U.S. Department of State – agreed that Putin probably did not order Navalny's killing in mid-February this year.

This assessment was based on secret intelligence information and facts known from the public space and an analysis of certain circumstances, such as the time of Navalny's death and the fact that it overshadowed Putin's re-election. Alexei Navalny died a month before the so-called presidential elections in Russia, which took place on March 15-17.

However, not all countries agree with the claims of US agencies. Some European security officials “remain skeptical” of such a theory, pointing to the enormous scope of Putin's power over Russia and its secret services.

The daily recalled that Leonid Volkov, a close associate of Navalny, said that the US intelligence community's assessment was naive. He himself stated that “the idea that Putin was not informed and did not consent to the killing of Navalny is is absurd“.
