Greek beach in Zakynthos it was recently voted the best in the world and is a popular tourist destination due to the characteristic shipwreck. However, tourists who want to see this place with their own eyes must be patient – for the second year in a row local authorities were forced to close the spot.

Closing the beach was recommended by a group of experts who visited the site as part of a regular safety inspection. According to them there is a significant risk of landslides due to the erosion of the surrounding cliffs – reports “Greek Reporter”.

The wreck of the Panagiotis ship has been lying on the beach since October 1980 – when the vessel ran aground. Currently, the ship is half buried in the sand, its hull is severely damaged, and several other parts have been washed away by the sea.

In turn, in 2018, seven people were injured in a landslide on the same beach. The Greek authorities then closed the beach and it remained closed to tourists until April 2019. Since then, beach safety has been re-evaluated twice a year.

The remote beach received its name in 1980, when a powerful storm stranded the Panagiotis ship there. Previously, the beach was known as Agios Georgios. There were rumors in the media that cigarettes and alcohol were smuggled on the vessel. The captain and some crew members were arrested, but the court later cleared them of all charges.
