The eldest daughter of the king of Thailand, Princess Bajrakitiyabha, who collapsed three weeks ago due to heart problems, remains unconscious, the Thai royal palace said in a statement.

44 years old Bajrakitiyabha fainted on December 15, when she was preparing her dogs for competitions in the province of Nakhon Ratchasima. She was rushed to a nearby clinic and then flown by helicopter to a hospital in Bangkok.

On Saturday evening, the Thai royal palace issued a statement about the health of the princess. It was reported that Bajrakitiyabha suffered a serious cardiac arrhythmia due to inflammation following a mycoplasma infection.

“The general condition of the princess is such that she remains unconscious,” it said in a statement. “Doctors continue to give her medication and devices to support her heart, lungs and kidneys, as well as administer antibiotics and closely monitor her condition,” it added.

The eldest child of the king of Thailand

The mother of the princess is the first wife of the king Thailand Mahy Vajiralongkorna, Princess of Soamsawali. Bajrakitiyabha is the monarch’s eldest child and has been in his innermost circle of advisers since he succeeded his father, King Bhumibol, to the throne in 2016.

The BBC notes that although Vajiralongkorn has not formally named a successor, the eldest daughter is seen as the best possible choice. In the past, the princess – a lawyer with a doctorate from Cornell University, one of the most prestigious American universities – held a position at the United Nations, was the Thai ambassador to AustriaSlovenia and Slovakia – lists Reuters.

Thailand’s succession law stipulates that, as a general rule, only a man can succeed to the throne, but a 1974 constitutional amendment allows the king’s daughter to succeed to the throne if the monarch has not named an heir first.
